P300 ha avuto il piacere di intervistare Thomas Covington, pilota statunitense attualmente impegnato nel mondiale motocross MX2 con il team ufficiale Husqvarna. Nonostante il motocross sia quasi una religione negli Stati Uniti, Covington ha scelto la strada europea per la sua carriera di pilota, debuttando nel mondiale in occasione del Gran Premio del Qatar 2014 a 18 anni da poco compiuti. Solo nel 2019 il 22enne dell’Alabama farà ritorno a casa, sempre in qualità di pilota Husqvarna al posto di Zach Osborne, che effettuerà il salto di categoria passando alla 450cc. Nel campionato del mondo, Covington ha vinto attualmente tre Gran Premi: il primo nel 2015 in Messico, il secondo due anni dopo sulla stessa pista e il terzo sempre nel 2017 a Villars sous Ecot. Attualmente occupa la sesta posizione in classifica, con quattro vittorie di manche.

Come sta andando finora la tua ultima stagione europea, prima di tornare negli Stati Uniti?
“La stagione non è iniziata molto bene per me, a causa dell’infortunio al ginocchio rimediato nell’ultimo Nazioni, ma una volta tornato in forma e in grado di spendere qualche ora in allenamento le cose hanno cominciato ad andare davvero bene. Lottare per le vittorie e per salire sul podio ogni settimana è quello per cui abbiamo lavorato”.
Nelle ultime gare sei stato davvero competitivo. Di cosa hai bisogno per battere le KTM di Prado e Jonass?
“La cosa più importante per me è la partenza. Se riesco a partire insieme a loro, sento di avere buone possibilità di batterli. Sono entrambi molto consistenti nelle partenze e questo è ciò che mi è mancato maggiormente”.
Quali sono i punti forti e i punti deboli dell’Husqvarna, in confronto alle altre moto?
“Il punto forte dell’Husqvarna è senz’altro la potenza del motore. È una moto molto veloce ma anche facile da controllare. Ha un’erogazione molto dolce, quindi non richiede mai troppo sforzo per essere maneggiata bene. È una moto facile da guidare. Non c’è nulla che si possa definire davvero negativo dell’Husqvarna, al momento”.
La MXGP è dominata da Herlings e Cairoli, ti aspettavi un campionato “a due velocità” con gli avversari così distanti?
“Onestamente non mi aspettavo un margine così ampio tra i primi due e gli altri. Ci sono molti piloti di talento in MXGP e credo che nessuno si aspettasse una situazione del genere. Bisogna avere grnade rispetto per Herlings e Cairoli in questo momento. È veramente un piacere vederli correre in pista ogni fine settimana”.
Cosa ti aspetti dal tuo ritorno negli Stati Uniti? Quali sono gli aspetti su cui pensi di dover lavorare maggiormente?
“Non lo definirei esattamente un ritorno. Non ho mai corso a livello di professionista negli Stati Uniti, quindi sarà proprio un debutto. Per me il Supercross rappresenterà la sfida più grande, dovrò imparare molto nella mia prima stagione indoor. Mi prenderò del tempo per imparare, concentrandomi principalmente sull’outdoor”.
Segui le gare degli Stati Uniti? Cosa pensi dei top riders?
“Seguo le corse degli Stati Uniti quasi tutti i fine settimana e la 250cc sembra essere decisamente combattuta. Tantissimi piloti hanno la possibilità di vincere ad ogni gara e questo è molto divertente da vedere. Non vedo l’ora di essere là e di gettarmi nella mischia!”.
Husqvarna è tornata al top con Anderson e Osborne, pensi di essere tu il prossimo?
“Ovviamente questo è l’obiettivo ma sicuramente ci vorrà del tempo per adattarsi al Supercross. Bisognerà lavorare duramente e dare il massimo. Questo è tutto ciò che posso fare davvero”.

“Ciao amici!!! Non vedo l’ora di vedere come sarà la pista. Ho sempre amato correre davanti agli appassionati italiani. Amo la passione che hanno per le corse!“.
How is your last European season going so far, before going back to the US?
“This season didn’t start off very good for me because of the knee injury I had at MXoN but once I got healthy and could put some hours in on the training bike things have started to go really well. Fighting for wins and being on the podium every week is what we’ve been working for”.
In these last races you’ve been very competitive – what do you need to beat Prado and Jonass’ KTMs?
“For me the start is the biggest thing. If I start together with those guys up front then I feel like I have a good shot at beating them. They are both so consistent with their starts and that’s where I’ve been lacking”.
What is the strongest and the weakest point of your Husqvarna, compared to other bikes?
“The strongest point of the Husky is definitely the power of the engine. It’s super fast but also easy to control. Has a really nice power delivery so it never feels like too much to handle. Just an easy bike to ride. There’s nothing you could say negative about the husky right now”.
MXGP is dominated by Herlings and Cairoli, did you expect such a two-speed championship, with other rivals set far back?
“Honestly I didn’t expect the gap to be so big from the top 2. There’s so much talent in the mxgp class and I don’t think anyone expected it to be so much like this. Have to have respect for Herlings and Cairoli right now. Really a pleasure to watch them go at it on the track each weekend”.
What do you expect from your comeback to the US? Which will be the features you think you have to work on the most?
“I wouldn’t call it a comeback. I never raced in the US professionally so it’s more of the debut. For me Supercross will be the biggest challenge and I’ll have to take in a lot in my first SX season there. Just going to take my time with it and then really focus on the outdoors”.
Are you watching US competitions? What do you think about the top riders?
“I watch the US races almost every weekend now and the 250 class there looks pretty intense. A lot of different guys have a shot at the win each weekend so it’s actually super fun to watch. Can’t wait to be over there mixing it up!”.
Husqvarna is back on top thanks to Anderson and Osborne, do you think you’ll be the next one?
“Obviously that’s the goal but for sure it will take some time to get used to SX. Just going to work hard and give it my all. That’s all I can really do”.
