Ecco l’intervista completa: buona lettura!

Ciao Ken!

ENGLISH VERSION

How are you doing, what are your expectations coming into the Nationals and how do you feel you’re doing so far?

My expectations coming into the Nationals were… Like, there were no expectations, I just had to do a couple of races to find myself, my spot, I should say. So there were zero expectations, and after one or two races everything started feeling a lot more familiar again. I think that as for now, everybody would agree we’re doing pretty good, running up there, I had a great weekend in Colorado, again, maybe better than it should’ve been at this point. But, I’m an ambitious person and I’m working hard and that’s all I can do and that is why I feel I can be up there fairly quick even just after a few races. As for now, I feel like we are doing pretty solid, one step in the right direction every week.

So after 2017, coming into 2018, did you expect to be so fast right off the beginning?

Oh, no. Thinking far back, that was probably one of the toughest ones, because there were rounds I didn’t race and pretty much an entire year, a comeback… So, no I didn’t expect to be decent right away, because again, we just started off with some good results, I didn’t feel right on the track, I mean, I wasn’t in my “me” yet, but we had a few podiums, I was going a lot better, but to be there with top notch riders, to be up there again, to bounce back, it’s just my mentality. It was hard to expect something coming for 2018, at least for the first few rounds, that’s what I do, be safe and get some solid results, whether it was a fifth, a fourth, a win, a second, it didn’t matter.

After San Diego you faced another challenge: how this challenge differed – if at all – from that one you had to kind of overcome?

The San Diego injury was a lot, it was not just a hand break, I felt there was lot more damage done again than just a “normal” metacarpal hand break, I would have been able to ride in a week and that was not the case. I got pretty lucky that I still have a hand again, so… This was mentally tougher for me than the last one [injury], just because because I was going on good and I needed the whole season to get back, to get a lot of races under my belt. Steps back again, I missed a lot of races, basically for a year and a half I did four races.

A lot of people in Europe consider the [Honda] CRF450 to be one of the top manifacturer bikes, let’s just talk about your experience with this bike and how it has been.

I mean, my work with the bike, together with the team it has been the best ever, when it comes to try things, whatever we do for me to get comfortable, it is great to have that and unfortunately, for the time I have been with the team, I haven’t been able to do many races, but I think the results have shown that I’m up there, so… I love it. It’s a family and I’m super-bummed I missed so many races, I hope I have many years left in me to race.

Let’s talk about the main differences from the European Motocross and here.

I really love the MXGP, I think the GPs is the Formula 1 of Motocross and the way they’re built up with everything around, it’s just very very professional, I think. I like that a lot, obviously I’m from Europe, I’ve always loved the GPs. Here the riding style and everything is a lot different, a lot more races and I think about the past years, the intensity has always been very high, in the Supercross here, you have a lot more people around, you have big races we don’t really have that in Europe. It’s the same, but… Different!

Is there any MXGP rider you’d like to challenge here in the US?

A lot of people always talk about maybe Jeffrey [Herlings] coming over, but he is at such a level that whether he is coming here or there, he’d be at front. At the same time Tomac is going really well; I was starting to get back up there, but I don’t really count myself into the top notch level yet. It would be interesting, but I don’t really see why he would even come over, he’s got it all over there, he’s killing it over there, winning all the races and making a lot of money, I don’t think I would ever come over, if I was him, I wouldn’t. He’s got everything over there, why mess it up?

You have a lot of fans in Italy, will they see you anytime in Europe?

I hope so, I’m in contact a lot with Toni Cairoli, he is a good friend of mine and the Italian fans has always been great to me, but Italy is very specific, I get to go to Germany once every two years for two weeks, I don’t know, it’s really tough going to Italy, unless I’m going there on vacation! [laughs].
